Read the passage given below and
answer the questions that follow : (1x8) (1) Man
always sees tigers as the symbol of pride, deepest fears, desires and
aspirations. Tiger is typically
sighted as the most fear-some predator which is admired for its lithe
muscles, courage and beauty. The
tiger's body has a hundred different uses, such as the fat is believed to be
the tonic of rheumatism and the flesh offers considerable strength to those
who eat it. (2) Tigers are powerful animals that are capable of taking down
their prey single-handedly and subduing a large prey. They have forelimbs and broad shoulders
with the help of which tigers grapple their prey while holding onto it with
the retractable, long claws of the broad forepaws. (3) Tigers have muscular bodies bearing
strong and powerful forelimbs and large heads. The colour of the coat varies, depending
entirely on the subspecies. These big
cats also display prominent black stripes that run across their body. No tiger has stripes that resemble other
counterparts i.e. each one has its own unique stripes. The black stripes of tigers serve as a
natural camouflage by hiding them amongst the dappled shadows and the long
grasses of their surroundings. (4) The tigers once inhabited all of Asia
ranging from Eastern Turkey to the Caspian Sea, including south of the
Tibetan plateau and the Sea of Okhotsk.
Sadly speaking, the tiger's range has been limited to a few major
habitats. Currently, tigers have
become extinct in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, and the Indus Valley of
Pakistan. They were once widespread
all through India including the foothills of the Himalayas, through Bhutan,
Nepal, Sikkim, Myanmar, and Assam, and the population has dramatically
reduced in the Indian Subcontinent.
Unfortunately, extreme hunting together with poaching makes tigers an
endangered species. (5) It is sad to contemplate the
extinction of an animal species due to the inexorable forces of nature. But, it is infinitely more depressing when
the extinction is caused by supposedly responsible human beings. (a) What does man perceive the tiger as ? (b) What is the tiger admired for ? (c) Which part of the tiger's body cures
rheumatism ? (d) How do tigers take down their prey ? (e) What is unique about the tiger's
stripes ? (f) How do the black stripes help tigers ?
(g) Which are the countries where tigers
have become extinct ? (h) How are humans responsible for making
them an endangered species ? |

Read the passage given below and
answer the questions that follow : (2x4)+(1x4)=12 It’s no less than a pilgrimage for those who
come to our shores for medical treatments.
Medical tourism in India is on an upswing, with about 5,00,000 foreign
patients travelling to India for medical care. The current worth of the industry is
estimated at 1,000 crores, with a growth potential of 100 percent every
year. The industry is poised to bring
in as much as Rs. 5,000 to 10,000 crores by 2012. Many
factors contribute to the expansion of this sector, one of them being the
high-end facilities. “Only when we go
to different countries, do we realize how much better off we are in terms of
infrastructure and quality. The
country has the resources to be on the global map for medical tourism as it
has a combination of all the right ingredients,” says Dr. Rajendra Prasad,
senior consultancy neurosurgery. India is
also renowned for its talent pool and the doctors are known for the expertise
and knowledge. Cutting edge medical technologies and drugs available are at
par with the developed world. The cost
factor is another big reason for the popularity of India as the medical
destination; the difference being as much as 10 or 20 times. The culture
of ‘Athithi Devo Bhava’ extends to medical tourism, with quality
facilities being offered by hospitals to international patients.
Super-specialty hospitals are successfully providing unparalleled medical
treatment to patients, resulting in superior outcomes, very low risk of
infections and excellent post-surgery care.
The whole experience can be simply termed as ‘value for money’. Medical
tourism is, undoubtedly, a fast growing sector. It is felt that the
government is not doing enough to promote this sector. The Ministry of
Tourism should pitch in a big way with more financial support to stakeholders
and better infrastructure facilities. More liberal loans, tax benefits and
incentives to medical service providers will go a long way in giving a boost
to this industry. Promoting medical tourism would mean more employment
opportunities for our people, more goodwill for the country and more dollars
for the government treasury. (a) What is the status of medical tourism
in India ? (b) Mention two factors which have
contributed to the growth of medical tourism in India. (c) What is most remarkable about our super-speciality
hospitals ? (d) What steps should the government take
to give a boost to medical tourism ? (e) What is meant by the word ‘ upswing’ ?
(Para 1) (i) energy (ii) height (iii) power (iv) growth (f) What is meant by the word ‘ expansion’
